The bioprocess team defines recipes to produce active probiotic bacteria while maximizing biomass and cell viability throughout the process and product’s shelf life. Development is based on many decades of experience in bacteria production, in a wide range of species and strains, but also on advanced knowledge of metabolism and nutritional requirements of our strains, thanks to the in silico work conducted by the Discovery and Translational Research team. The bioprocess team continuously optimizes strain development from lab-scale to industrial production, improving processes to ensure efficient and high-quality production. They work in close collaboration with the discovery and translational team for strains’ genomic characterization and with production facilities to support the implementation of new processes.
Long-Term Goals and Ongoing Projects
The bioprocess team’s long-term goals include optimizing existing recipes, expanding market reach by leveraging novel strains, enhancing scientific knowledge, and proactively addressing technical challenges for continuous production improvement.
The Bioprocess platform is currently conducting a range of innovative and high impact projects. The Women’s Health Project leverages our expertise in developing customized, strain specific production recipes, including for novel strains isolated from the vaginal microbiota. The Postbiotics Project reflects our commitment to innovation through our work on heat inactivated strains and the targeted production of metabolites of interest. The New Strain Acquisition Project highlights our ability to manage the production of a broad diversity of taxa, having worked with more than 30 new species over the past decade.
Moreover, the bioprocess team is actively working on the continuous improvement of operating procedures and the use of new technologies, for a more efficient and complete bioprocess development and/or optimization. Leveraging omics and high-throughput tools, we aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of our bioprocessing methods. To this end, we are always evaluating new collaborations to benefit from cutting-edge technologies, especially in the cells preservation area.
