We are committed to accelerating microbiome research to develop new applications, methods, and technology to improve human health. We firmly believe that innovative health solutions can be identified and implemented strategically through cooperation and creative thinking.
This belief has fostered the implementation of our Innovation Program, which is dedicated to promoting innovative research aimed at understanding how dietary and nutritional interventions with potential or demonstrated probiotics affect the host and gastrointestinal microbiota, in the broad context of maintaining general wellness and health in humans.
The innovation program complements the innovative axes and projects already in place within the different R&D platforms. Indeed, Lallemand Health Solutions, through the Rosell® Institute, maintains and expands its know-how via advanced and robust strategies:
- Characterization of its strains from selection to demonstration of their beneficial effects.
- Development of original galenic forms to meet customers’ needs for targeted populations
- Use and optimization of new technologies and models, developing prolific partnerships with start-ups, well-recognized biotech companies, and even large international companies
- Specific collaborations with external experts who are recognized in their respective fields to reinforce our current knowledge and expertise, and to challenge our comfort zone
R&D Platforms
Our R&D team currently comprises three platforms that work in close collaboration, facilitated by project management within larger research programs. The overarching goal is to fully leverage the expertise of each collaborator.
A dedicated innovation team has been set up to strengthen our internal teams. It communicates transversally with both R&D and business collaborators. The main objective is to analyze different external opportunities for strain acquisition to add new probiotic solutions to our portfolio.
The evaluations are done jointly at the scientific and market levels. There are several key points to consider from an R&D point of view: strain safety, production capacities (including growth and stability), existing evidence of its efficacy and additional needs for effects to be demonstrated through new trials, health segment to be considered, current internal offer and competition, target population, formulation of the active ingredient, and final galenic form. All these analyses require the skills of different collaborators within R&D and consideration of the timeline to develop this new probiotic solution.
Conversely, the scientific innovation team lists and prioritizes R&D team needs and can identify gaps within the different platforms or health segments to seek out the appropriate technologies, models, or experts externally.
We are currently enhancing the scientific data related to historical health segments where our products are already established but need innovative approaches. Simultaneously, our R&D team is expanding our portfolio by thoroughly characterizing the effects of both our existing and new probiotic strains of interest. We are strategically positioning these strains in emerging health segments such as women’s health, metabolic health, healthy aging, and sports.
We encourage creativity among all employees and facilitate coordination across various research programs by collaborating with new external partners. We are enhancing our capabilities by adopting new technologies and establishing partnerships with cutting-edge service providers. Simultaneously, we are collaborating with renowned international researchers to identify new probiotic strains that will complement our portfolio.
