Our integrated translational R&D process is central to our scientific strategy, enabling the seamless progression from discovery to application and to ensure the success and impact of our mission.

Identify strains, characterize them, and establish their safety
The identification and development of new strains starts with their isolation, characterization, and the establishment of their safety as supplements. The discovery and translational research team benefits from a solid knowledge base, including the full genetic sequencing of established strains, and has the expertise to perform genetic sequencing in-house to characterize new strains. With their knowledge of production constraints and best practices, the bioprocess platform can further inform the selection of new strains for their development.
Evaluate strains’ key properties in vitro and in silico
The evaluation of strains using in vitro and in silico methods is an essential step to determine their key properties, such as adhesion to their target host cells, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, metabolic activity, and many more. The discovery and translational research team conducts studies on model organisms in house and collaborates with external partners to access specialized research models, supporting the investigation of probiotics’ benefits and underlying mechanisms of action. The galenic platform helps determine the most effective way to administer biotics strains and formulations to ensure that they reach their site of action and exert their full benefits.
Assess probiotic functionality
The development of new probiotic strains and the identification of novel applications for long-established strains involve the pre-clinical evaluation of their potential benefitsin vivo prior to their assessment in clinical trials. The discovery and translational research team conducts studies on model organisms in house or in collaboration with other organizations to better understand probiotics’ benefits and mechanisms of action. Notably, the RIMAP benefits from a full in-house Caenorhabditis elegans platform.
Demonstrate clinical applications and comply with regulations
All probiotic strains and formulations distributed by Lallemand Health Solutions are supported by an extensive body of scientific evidence. The clinical team conducts rigorously designed clinical trials that comply with established best practices and guidelines. Over the years, several probiotic strains and blends have been the object of pharmacovigilance programs, and many have received approved claims from recognized healthcare authorities in various jurisdictions: Canada (Health Canada), United States (FDA), European Union (EFSA), Australia (TGA), and Brazil (ANVISA). All research teams are instrumental in contributing the necessary information to support safety and health claims.
Develop and Industrialize Optimized production Processes
Our dedicated process platforms develop and continuously optimize probiotics production recipes, from strain production to finished products, and from lab-scale to industrial production. The bioprocess platform establishes conditions of bacteria propagation, concentration and drying in order to produce a maximum of viable cells that are resistant to stresses encountered until their consumption. The galenic platform explores novel formulations and galenic forms that not only ensure efficacy, but that also create an enjoyable experience for people consuming our supplements.
Advance knowledge and improve processes
Our R&D approach is grounded in our commitment to continuous advancement of evidence and improvement of processes. Our microbiome program pushes the boundaries of knowledge on microorganisms and microbiota, within and beyond the gut. The innovation program serves as a catalyst to leverage expertise across teams and identify new areas for potential growth and development. Our collective knowledge and expertise are also leveraged in the Expert’BiomeTM CDMO by Lallemand program which helps customers develop tailor-made products.
